Biography
One of the most interesting and charismatic conductors of the young generation. He began his career in 2014 with a spectacular victory in a competition organized by the National Philharmonic in Warsaw. This resulted in signing a two-year contract as an assistant conductor of maestro Jacek Kaspszyk at the National Philharmonic. Among others his conducting artistry was confirmed also by receiving an invitation to work closely with maestro Krzysztof Penderecki during the preparation and recording of his latest album entitled Penderecki Conducts Penderecki. Vol 1, which was honored with prestigious, most important music award in the world Grammy Awards. In 2015, together with National Philharmonic Orchestra, he remarkably performed Gustav Holst's Planets, which to this day are one of the most popular recordings on the Internet with favourable reviews and opinions.
Education
A graduate of the I. J. Paderewski State Elementary Music School and the F. Chopin National Musical High School in Cracow. In 2009 he graduated from the Instrumental Department (Specialty: Clarinet) at Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice and in 2013 from the Symphonic and Opera Conducting Department at Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw.
Successes
- The laureate of the first place in the Macroregional Wind Instruments Competition in Lublin and the finalist of the Kiejstut Bacewicz 16th International Chamber Music Competition in Łódź.
- In 2002, he participated as a soloist clarinetist in a ceremonial concert on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the birth of Wojciech Kilar in the Cracow Philharmonic (including the concert’s premiere of the theme from the film “The Pianist”).
- Between 2010 and 2014 he was the general and artistic director as well as chief conductor of the Sinfonia Speranza Symphony Orchestra he founded, with which he made numerous recordings and gave concerts, creating unique projects on the artistic map of Poland.
- He co-created and recorded, together with his Sinfonia Speranza Orchestra, an album entitled “Etnofonie Kurpiowskie” in Witold Lutosławski concert studio of Polish Radio in Warsaw. This project, selected from 288 candidates, was one of five nominated for the award of Koryfeusz Muzyki Polskiej (Coryphaeus of Polish Music) in the category of “Event of the Year”.
- In April 2011, in St. Cross Church in Warsaw, Sinfonia Speranza, together with the Choir of the Warsaw University of Technology and the soloists of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, performed “Requiem in D minor, KV 626” W. A. Mozart under his leadership, co-creating the first anniversary of the Smolensk catastrophe.
- At the invitation of Jan Ołdakowski – the Warsaw Uprising Museum director, he co-created together with his Sinfonia Speranza Orchestra the celebrations of the 67th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising at Piłsudski Square in Warsaw.
- In 2012, he made his debut in the United States, taking a three-week tour with the Cracovian Chamber Orchestra Forum Sinfonia, during which he conducted the Gian Carl Menotti opera “Amahl and the Night Visitors” among others.
- Between 2012 and 2014 he was artistic director and chief conductor of Canticum Choir.
- He prepared the National Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra as well as soloists conducting rehearsals for recordings of the latest piece by Krzysztof Penderecki “Dies illa” in the Concert Hall of the National Philharmonic in Warsaw. This song, as well as the whole album (Penderecki Conducts Penderecki. Vol 1), was awarded the 2017 Grammy Award.
- Together with Szymon Nehring (finalist of the 17th Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition), he took part in a ceremonial concert at the National Philharmonic on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II under the Honorary Patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland performing the Fryderyk Chopin “Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor op. 11”.
- At the special invitation of the composer along with the National Philharmonic Orchestra and Zbigniew Zamachowski as a narrator, the artist recorded music by Jan Duszyński for the film “Halo Ziemia” (“Hello Earth”) in Witold Lutosławski concert studio of Polish Radio in Warsaw. This unique project, commissioned by the Copernicus Science Center (a film made in the fulldome technology and intended for viewing on the planetarium’s spherical screen), has been honored with many international, prestigious awards.
- In 2016, along with the Cracovian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, he took part in a ceremonial concert on the occasion of the 70 th anniversary of the F. Chopin National Music School in Cracow. The artist conducted a piece of music by Krzysztof Meyer, “Metamorfozy” (“Metamorphoses”) for small orchestra (world premiere) and together with Daniel Stabrawa (the soloist and concertmaster of Berlin Philharmonic) he performed Karol Szymanowski “Violin Concerto No. 2 op.61”.
- Together with the Polish Radio Orchestra in Warsaw he has made many archival recording for the Polish Radio.
Cooperation
Among others as a guest conductor he cooperates with: the National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra in Warsaw, the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, the Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra, the Polish Radio Orchestra in Warsaw as well as with the Polish Baltic Philharmonic in Gdańsk, the Cracow Philharmonic Orchestra, Podkarpacka, Świętokrzyska, Warmińsko-Mazurska, Koszalińska, Śląska and Zielona Góra Philharmonic Orchestra.
He has performed with outstanding soloists such as: Daniel Stabrawa, Konstanty Andrzej Kulka, Szymon Nehring, Petrit Ceku, Szymon Krzeszowiec, Roman Lasocki, Jarosław Nadrzycki, Janusz Wawrowski, Maciej Miecznikowski, Ahmed Dickinson Cardenas, Mariola Cieniawa, Marek Napiórkowski, Artur Lesicki, Piotr Rojek.
Between 2017 and 2019 Maciej Tarnowski cooperated with the Zielona Góra Philharmonic Orchestra and invited soloists by giving regular concerts as well as he inaugurated the annual prestigious International Guitar Festival in Zielona Góra.
